Hardening

The hardening process is a heat treatment method in which steel is heated to a specific temperature and then rapidly cooled to increase its hardness. This process allows the formation of the martensite phase in the steel's internal structure, making the material more resistant to wear and impact.

Stages of the Hardening Process:

• Preheating: The steel is heated in a controlled manner to reduce internal stresses.

Annealing

Types of Annealing:

• Full Annealing: After heating the steel, it is cooled very slowly to homogenize its internal structure.

Tempering

Tempering is a heat treatment process applied to reduce the brittleness of hardened steels and increase their impact resistance. This process involves reheating the steel, which has gained high hardness after hardening, to a controlled temperature and holding it for a specific time.

Tempering Stages:

• Heating: The hardened steel is heated to the specified temperature (typically between 150-650°C).
• Holding: The steel is held at the specified temperature for an adequate amount of time.
• Cooling: The steel is cooled in a controlled manner to achieve the desired mechanical properties.

Tempering Temperatures and Effects:

• 150-250°C: Maximum hardness is maintained, but toughness is low.
• 250-450°C: Hardness slightly decreases while toughness increases, suitable for springs and cutting tools.
• 450-650°C: Hardness decreases, but ductility increases; suitable for parts that carry heavy loads.
